AKTION Club of Scranton

Our AKtion Club is a community service group of adults with developmental disabilities. The group is co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Scranton. An AKtion Club has four primary goals for its members:

    • To develop initiative and leadership skills
    • To provide experience in living and working together
    • To Serve the community
    • To prepare for useful citizenship.

What We Do

The AKtion Club performs a variety of services to the
community. It also has fund-raising projects to raise
money for needs in our comunity. Some of our
projects and services during the past year were:

  • Shopped for a delivered laundry products to the Ronald McDonald House
  • Ongoing pet supply donations to the Animal
    Care Association, plus cash donations
  • Made Kitty Tuna Treats for Animal Care Association
  • Assisted Voluntary Action Center in assembling a
    variety of projects to benefit community
    organizations
  • Organized and conducted a Summer Party play
    day and decorated and filled snack bags for Lil’
    Tykes Pre School and Day Care
  • Continued to assist a rural village family near
    Nairobi, Kenya who have been struggling with
    medical harships and a special needs child
  • Sent donations to Nay Aug Park Fund for park
    restoration and to Voluntary Action Center to
    help with publication of their Emergency Guide
    for Seniors
  • Make centerpieces for Meals on Wheels recipients
    and Arc Families
  • Made holiday favors for area nursing homes
  • Financially helped a special needs family at
    Christmas time

Who Runs the AKtion Club

An AKtion Club is run similar to a Kiwanis Club. An
annual election of officers is held in October.
Officers and duties are as follows:

  • PRESIDENT: conducts the meeting
  • VICE-PRESIDENT: conducts the meeting in the
    absence of the president
  • TREASURER: collects the dues and makes a
    financial report to the club
  • SECRETARY: takes minutes during the meeting and
    reads the minutes of the last meeting
  • SERGEANT-AT-ARMS: leads the group in the
    Pledge of Allegiance
  • BANNER RAISER: raises the banner at the beginning
    of the meeting
  • ROLL CALL PERSON: takes attendance and calls roll
    during the meeting
  • BIRTHDAY GREETER: leads the club in singing
    Happy Birthday to members
  • BADGE PERSON: passes out badges and collects
    them at the end of the meeting

Special Events

  • Luncheon with Kiwanis Club at The Arc to recognize
    our Club’s awards and accomplishments
  • State Convention in Altoona
  • Presented a Christmas musical at The Arc for
    friends, family and the community

Fund Raiser

  • Sold dip mixes and hot drink mixes
  • Bake Sales at The Arc
  • Flea Market at The Arc
  • Cafe Friday - hoagie & pizza sales
 

 

The AKtion Club members play as hard as they work. We take time out for fun. We have parties, picnics, and entertainment.
